The Greater AC Comic Con: Remembers Cliff Robertson

Cliff Robertson September 10th 2011

We have loved Mr. Robertson's work almost as long as we've loved science fiction and he will be sorely miss. A great actor he won The Oscar for the film Charly. And was picked by JFK to portray President Kennedy in the film PT 109.

In The Sixties he starred with John Austin in  one of the most eerie but shocking episodes of The Twilight Zone.

Also in the sixties Robertson played Shame and was one of the last surviving Bat Man TV Show villains.
Most recently he played Uncle Ben in the hit film SpiderMan which I always thought was a class move because at the time , no actor to me alive represented classic sci-fi like Cliff Robertson.

Good Night Sir and God Bless.

You've given me hours of fun and enjoyment through your contributions to sci-fi.

The Greater AC with feature a viewing room..with Under Dog

Speed of lightning, Roar of thunder!

The very first comic con I went to was a blast.
When I ran out of money, I relaxed in the viewing room and watched old school clips of some of the best sci-fi and comics classics.

So when I started outlining ideas for The Greater AC Comic Con I know I wanted a screening room!

Join us for the special guests, vendors, workshops and panels October 9th and 10th!
But also join us is the Screening Room to share in memories with other sci-fi/comic fans!

I have a list of stuff that will be a surprise but I figured I would also wet your whistle with hints as to some of the stuff you can expect to see.

Top on my list was one of my first favorite Super Heroes...UNDER DOG!

DC's The New 52...New Lipstick...Same Pig

Thumbs Down

I'm one of the few people I know that both still follows comic books but was around for Crisis on Infinite Earths (more on that in a later blog.) I loved those days when Marvel and DC wanted to tell great stories.

Sometimes they were multi chapters like The Laughing Fish story that ran in Detective Comics courtesy of Dennis O'Neil and Marshall Rogers. Sometimes they were amazing stories told in 32 pages (less when you take out the ads.)

Then one day my friend Shawn let me check out his copy of Crisis on Infinite Earths number one, where I saw the heroic deaths of some of my favorite super villains, the original Crime Syndicate.

I accepted that DC no longer wanted 17 different earths and 12 Super Man's (although I loved Super Boy Prime.)

Fast forward to today and DC and Marvel both have basically 5 writers between them. They write everything. They all seem to wish they wrote The Watchmen and they seem hell bent on spitting in the face of every great writer that came before them. Problem is these 5 guys bring very little imagination to the table.

And while I am venting. None of them have developed anything interesting by way of new characters. They have created no new super heroes, no interesting regular persons (such as J. Jonah Jameson in Marvel Comics) or no new super villains.

These new writers only claim to fame is to tear down what other great writers have built up.

Now I would like to commend some newer writers who do get it right and understand that people over the age of 30 and under the age of 17 enjoy comics in general because they are fun. There is Dawud Anyabwile  who is working on a new Brother Man series which is long over due. There was the late Dwayne Mc Duffie who went from writing for The Justice League Unlimited cartoon series (which may have been the best cartoon series ever) to doing an incredible job on The Justice League DCU book. Then there is the under rated but immensely talented story writer Peter David. And why isn't Chris Claremont and John Byrne offered a book together?

Anyway, DC's New 52 is just another piece of this 21st Century, everything is super instant and twice as disposable syndrome. Although I still find comics in general a lot of fun. In many ways much of what I loved about comics died not long after The Crisis On Infinite Earths.

Question Of The Day! Who Was Your Favorite Comic Book Artist of The 20th Century?

The Drawing Room Number One

This Classic Tale with words by Chris Claremont and razor sharp artwork and story telling by John Byrne and Terry Austin is where Wolverine's legend was truly born! (more on that later this week)

Okay Let's be Clear on WHAT I am Asking You.

I am asking not who was the best but who do YOU LIKE THE MOST?

Do you know anyone who has not loved seeing their favorite Marvel or DC Character rendered by George Perez?
Who's art work, pen strokes, story telling, impacted YOU PERSONALLY the most during the 20th Century.

Jack "KING " Kirby has perhaps inspired and influenced more than any other sci fi artist. But is he your favorite ever?
Later today I will write about 4 distinct people who's art changed my life and brought me hours upon hours of enjoyment. These 4 artist are 4 men who I could just sit and look at their 20th century work for hours on end....and believe me my total list would be more than just 4...

But right now who are your favorite artists?

Which artists influenced and impacted your life?

Question Of The Day. Who Is Your Favorite Sci Fi Villian and Why?

Bring On The Bad Guys and Gals!

The give us a reason to watch our favorite heroes.

What was the one negative about The Black and White George Reeves SuperMan?
The fact that it took till Super Man 2 for Super Man to face any real challenge.

So now.

Who are the Villians You love To Hate?
Khan has been smooth with the ladies and deadly with the men since Star Trek

Adrian Veidt is one of the smoothest villian's ever.

What needs to be said about Evil-Lyn?

Does any villain have more memorable lines than Darth Vader?

Your Ultimate Spider Man is Now Black

Peter Parker's Ultimate Gig has been out sourced to Mr. Miles Morales

Seriously though. Writer Brian Michael Bendis has come up with another idea to make Marvel a quick truck load of money. About every 10 years Marvel thinks about doing something that will draw news and camera crews but truly has no lasting impact.

It started when Marvel character North Star was outed as the first gay super hero.

This year Marvel has killed off the Ultimate Universe (not it's main stream line) version of Peter Parker/Spiderman and brought in a half Black and half Latino replacement.

I am all for as many different heroes from as many back grounds as possible. And I know many black readers who identified more with Spiderman than they did Powerman.

My main problem with this is that Marvel knows they have a time limit on  this idea and that its only a ploy to sell a few thousand more books.

I say...Marvel should do like they did with The Who Is The Black Panther Series.

A. Bring in an A Plus Staff. Heck re-unite Reginald Hudlin and John Romita Junior.

B. Let them create a totally new and exciting character not spray black face on your flagship/franchise guy.

C.This has nothing to do with the Black Spidey but just a major bee up in my bonnet. Hire more writers than Brian Michael Bendis...I'm just saying Marvel and DC has have about 4000 characters that are interesting but all the stories are written by a total of 5 people....

D. Develop superheroes from Asia, Native American reservation, and every other culture that has been either forgotten or white washed. And do the research to make the characters cultural but  intensely interesting

Still despite all that I am very interested to see WHAT they do with Black Spiderman.....
